I have the same problem.
I logged in to "fail-safe gnome" and download the kde-desktop, to see if it is effected as well.
I restarted and logged in to kubuntu and everything is great.
Can the fact the kubuntu is not effected connect this problem to compiz?
I have an intel graphics card
