I'm running the exact same issue, I've upgraded from 9.04 to 9.10 and it freezes everytime I enable compiz. My machine is pretty the same as The Founder's machine, same brand, same chipset, same memory size. I've been using ubuntu since 8.04, not flawlessly, but no issue I've encoutered was as severe as this one.
Compiz is installed in my machine, but as soon as I enable it, ubuntu freezes. I've followed Julien tip, installed the 2.4 driver and tried to enable compiz: no luck. Instead of freezing, the X server gets restarted without compiz enabled. I'm running ok now, with compiz disabled, but I'm afraid of upgrading my other machine, I think it's better make a test with the live cd (if it's possible) or just wait for this but to get fixed.
