I can reproduce this problem in Karmic 9.10, Beta, current on updates till today.

Dell Dimension 3000

00:02.0 VGA compatible controller: Intel Corporation 82865G Integrated Graphics Controller (rev 02)
2G Ram.

Karmic works well (with no effects) using custom xorg.conf / Vesa driver.
