As a follow-up to my previous comment, I found a solution at http://ubuntuguide.org/wiki/Ubuntu:Intrepid: Turn off "Detecting RANDR (monitor) changes" in Ubuntu/Kubuntu under Settings->Advanced Settings->Service Manager. Problem resolved for me.
