I installed the unofficial package as mentioned in https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/xserver-xorg-video-intel/+bug/233787/comments/13
sudo apt-get remove xserver-xorg-video-i810 xserver-xorg-video-all
Then install http://people.ubuntu.com/~bryce/Testing/intel/hardy-i386/xserver-xorg-video-intel_2.3.1-1ubuntu1~bwh3_i386.deb. This time it installs without a problem.
sudo dpkg-reconfigure xserver-xorg
It still says the driver is vesa and the resolution is still 800x600. If I change the driver to "intel" or "i810" I can hear the prompt sound from gdm, but the screen remains black. I have to move to a console to fix xorg.conf.
