On further testing it seems like everything is behaving identically to when I simply added:
Option "DRI" "false
to my xorg.conf (and I did check to make sure I hadn't accidentally left it like that). Meaning that there are no crashes, but almost everything that uses OpenGL (Stepmania, Glest, Warzone 2100) now runs unusably slow. I didn't notice it in Blender because it's a very complex scene in the first place, and it's always slow (just a matter of degree).
I'm not sure if this is actually related or not, but I figured I'd point it out here. Makes me wonder if the latest mesa git doesn't just disable dri by default. If so, I wouldn't exactly call this bug fixed.
