This error is in general caused by some other software setting the console in an incorrect state. It's not an X bug, but a bug in something else which has changed X's console underneath it.
Did you install any extra packages besides the defaults when installing this system? Can you provide a package list from the system ('dpkg -l | grep ^ii') ?
