I don't think it helps much, but I started the live system on a computer with an RV630 (which has this problem), and if I do compiz --replace I just get:

xset q doesn't reveal the location of the log file. Using fallback /var/log/Xorg.0.log

can not add gnomecompat, reseting

and then it crashes. Nothing in Xorg.0.log either :-(
