I've tried the PPA driver now.

Without XAA the Xorg task uses constantly 10 - 50% of the CPU (a few
applications are open, but in the background; in the foreground only a
Konsole with top is running).

With XAA the Xorg taks stays under 5% (same setup)

I didn't try Option "FBTexPercent" "0" so far.
OpenGL is also broken.

If it matters: my system has a Mobility Radeon 9000 with 64 MB VRAM:
