I've tried lucid a couple of days and Xorg is using about 240-270MB virtual memory (120-140MB resident), which is much better than the 1.5GB it used on karmic, but I'm not sure if the bug is fixed, or whether I just need to run it a while longer.
I tried running okular with the pdf files mentioned above. It does increase Xorg's memory usage by about 100MB, but it is accounted for in xrestop, and released after okular is closed.
