i have this issue. closing firefox, and other desktop apps does not help. X remains 408MB (after starting at 80MB). almost all of this memory is private (not shared libraries etc.). I've tried using MOZ_DISABLE_IMAGE_OPTIMIZE, but it didn't seem to make a change.

xrestop does not show a lot of pixmap memory used (only 7.6MB total).

so x is taking a lot of memory, that isn't pixmaps memory
