I have now upgraded, twice, a VM from 8.04 to 10.04, and can still reproduce this problem despite running

  # dpkg-reconfigure console-setup

to ensure correct values.

I have other Lucid VMs that I installed from scratch which work, and this VM works as 8.04 prior to upgrading to Lucid.

Any suggestions or requests (for further info)?
