Further support for the supposition that another process is waiting for input events from the keyboard: using the accessible on-screen keyboard it is possible to log-in first time.

Putting together the keys that cause the reset with those that are ignored, it appears that whatever is listening to the keyboard is ignoring alpha but expecting a single numeral or Enter. What is more, the *only* numeral I find causes this reset is "2" - it seems beyond coincidence, but I've tried pressing 1,3,4,5,6,7,8,9,0 without xserver restarting, but as soon as "2" is pressed it happens.

Changing my user password to "my1pennies3" and clicking the "Log In" button (rather than pressing the Enter key on the keyboard), the xserver doesn't crash!

With the session started I was prompted for the password to the keyring (which was set to the original user password). As soon as I pressed "2" in the dialog the xserver restarted.

Strangest bug I ever did see!
