Well, I must be lucky: the very next version ( 2:1.4.1~git20071105-1ubuntu3 ) reintroduces the bug. Therefore, the bug must've been introduced somewhere between the following two versions:

I have also restored all other related Xorg server packages to their current versions, with no effect on behavior; thus, thus only the 'core' seems to matter.
