Theodore: as I said in the mentioned bug #122118 I'm using Gutsy too without problems with the kernel version 2.6.22-14.52 of linux-image-2.6.22-14-generic. What's your kernel?

Comments on bug #124406 seem to support my guess that this is a kernel bug (starting from: https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+bug/124406/comments/3). And that it was fixed in some version and has come back in some other version: https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+bug/124406/comments/74
