In Hardy, the latest version of xserver-xorg-core (1.4.1~git20080105-1ubuntu2) causes the same problem. Downgrading to 1.4.1~git20080105-1ubuntu1 solves the problem:
wget http://archive.ubuntu.com/ubuntu/pool/main/x/xorg-server/xserver-xorg-core_1.4.1~git20080105-1ubuntu1_i386.deb
sudo dpkg -i xserver-xorg-core_1.4.1~git20080105-1ubuntu1_i386.deb
