Bug Description

Binary package hint: totem

The latest version of totem (2.15.92) no longer loads external .srt subtitle files. The files are standard subtitle files of the format:

----------- begin subtitle excerpt ------------------

1
00:00:00,000 --> 00:00:11,000
Subtitles by IRNBRU, Spec and others
Please repost corrections on extratitles

2
00:02:02,900 --> 00:02:05,990
On January 6th 1917

3
00:02:06,000 --> 00:02:10,200
Five soldiers condemned to death were lead to
the sector of Bouchavel,

-------------- end subtitle excerpt ----------------

I tried specifying the file name on the command prompt but then it does not even play the video.

Thanks for your bug. Do you use totem-gstreamer or totem-xine? Did it work with 1.5.91?

I'm using totem-xine. I just installed Edgy so I hadn't tested it out with
1.5.91. I remember that they were working on Dapper.

Does it happen with totem-gstreamer too? Do you have an URI to download an example maybe?

With totem-gstreamer they work most of the time but often I get an "Internal
data flow error" (screenshot attached). When that error appears if I just
click ok and then click on the play button, it works and the subtitles show
up fine. That error only appears with movies that have subtitles.

With totem-xine the subtitles do not appear at all, but I also do not get
that error ever.

This bug happens with any .srt file. I've attached part of one file here.
All you need to do is rename the file to the same name as the .avi file that
you are playing and put them in the same directory. Then the subs should
appear at the time intervals specified in the .srt file. So for the
attached file test.srt, just put it inside a directory with a movie called
test.avi or test.mpg and the subtitles should appear.

I'm not sure if the attachments I mentioned went through by email. Here they are.

xine-lib issue according to upstream:

This means that it's a problem with xine-lib. Please file a bug directly with
xine-lib, following the instructions at:
http://www.gnome.org/projects/totem/#bugs"

Is there any follow up on this issue? The bug still exists in Edgy with all the packages updated.
