I also have an i810 chipset with the same problem (if a run xfce4-terminal my X session crash)!

I'm using:

amartins@gamma:~$ lsb_release -a
No LSB modules are available.
Distributor ID: Ubuntu
Description: Ubuntu 7.04
Release: 7.04
Codename: feisty

I would like to thank chAoS, because his workaround (change the color depth from 24 to 16) solve the problem!
