Regardless of one's opinion on the merits of PulseAudio, more and more wine users will be left out in the cold if no work is done to improve the current situation. Asking general users not to use pulse is probably unrealistic, thus the energy should be focused on improving the way in which the two interact.

To those using wine with pulseaudio on 64-bit systems, beware of older version 32-bit binary pulse libraries. I'm not sure if this affects winealsa->libasound->pulse but it does for winepulse->pulse. Gentoo in particular ships (shipped?) old 32-bit pulse libraries. These would contain errors, causeing the local shm transport to fail, falling back to tcp which will inevitably lock up from protocol issues of the older more buggy libraries. Ideally the version of the 32-bit libraries should be identical to the 64-bit.
