I've just built the latest tightvnc (1.2.x) for lucid, and the included libvnc.so seems to be working fine. I had to apply a couple of tiny patches to the xserver:
I did my build by hand, and the process as it stands seems to involve adding the vnc module to a copy of the xserver source tree and rebuilding. If someone better acquainted with the xserver source could get the above patches applied to the Ubuntu tree and package tightvnc, that would be fantastic..
I will try to attach a copy of my xserver binary package and the libvnc.so..
