I later realized I could force the version through synaptic, I hope this is what you wanted me to do, it still did not alleviate the issue.

$ apt-cache policy libasound2

Since it did not resolve the issue and the major/minor versions match, can I remove the forcing of the version? I still do not have Pulseaudio in the list of available outputs in vlc preferences.
