i should also note that a vanilla libass tarball from sourceforge will not suffice either.

the libass1 and libass-dev packages in the intrepid repo, along with the libass src in the extras/contrib folder of a git vlc pull are the proper versions to compile with.

these versions are up-to-date with the latest additions added by the VLC and MPlayer dev teams
