I retitle and correct the package, since pmount is not actually the culprit. It behaves exactly as mount would.
James, can you please try to remove /dev/hda from your /etc/fstab, try
pmount -d /dev/hda
and look what the permissions are after this?
Can everybody please try to add "umask=777" to the options in /etc/fstab and look whether "mount /cdrom" behaves any better afterwards?
