I have the same problem with an Asus notebook.

My fix was:

1. changed /etc/usplash.conf to 1024x768, which fixed the shutdown splash.
2. removed vga=771 from /boot/grub/menu.lst, which allowed the entry in /etc/usplash.conf to be used at bootup.
