OK, during boot up is fine now, no breaks or crashes.
The problem now is that the usplash does not show up during shutdown. Instead of the ubuntu logo and the progress bar I see the shutdown messages. Only at the end I see ubuntu logo with an empty bar for a couple of seconds and then the machine powers off.
