okay, ive run the command mentioned (su username) and i get " unknown id: user name " im no expert but this says to me that the user doesnt exist :-)

ive tried creating a new user (with a different name) by going to system settings - user management and then going to administrator mode and adding a new user, but it doesnt seem to create one.

i have also tried running sudo useradd user name, and then doing su user name, this works, but the new user doesnt show up in either the user management option or the login window.
