Those three steps will show what changes will be made without the updates, with the updates and with the two commands you used from that website. My opinion is that this can greatly help and give the developers/maintainers at least a clue to where the problem actually is.

As you said, doing those two commands fixed your problem, so something extra was changed with that command (as sed had the "g" option which means to repeatedly replace that piece of text), something that the current command didn't catch.

As a suggestion, you could install Ubuntu on another hard drive (and disconnect all other hard drives) on the same machine, which wouldn't change anything on your original hard disk and you don't have to mess up your settings.

Every step of the way you should check if your CD/DVD works and does not retract (loads back in) when you press the eject button.

Try with and without a CD/DVD media in the drive.
