Weird, maybe you should provide more information:
- CD/DVD drive brand and model number
- SATA or (P)ATA?
Can you post the current output of this command in terminal:
apt-cache policy udev
Also, can you post the contents of the file
/etc/udev/rules.d/60-persistent-storage.rules in these events:
- After the install of Ubuntu 8.10 Intrepid Ibex, WITHOUT updating anything.
- After the install of ALL intrepid updates (and after the reboots it requires).
- After you apply the changes with the two lines of command you use.
This could shed some light on where the problem actually is.
