Nevermind. I fixed it. It now looks like this on the first comp:

title Ubuntu 8.10, kernel 2.6.27-7-generic
uuid 841ad554-74e5-4f9b-82b9-00eae02e6c3d
kernel /boot/vmlinuz-2.6.27-7-generic root=/dev/sda1 ro quiet splash

No progress on eject however...
