I just installed 10.04.1 i386 on the netbook, and it boots, so the netbook doesn't seem to have any hardware defects. It seems like a regression to me.

In case it helps figure things out, the 10.04.1 setup shows the Ubuntu logo when loading up (KMS, I'm assuming), and 10.10 shows Ubuntu and blinking dots in text mode.
