I confirm this bug on a clean karmic installation. It happens at every reboot, not using autologin.

The requested output before setting the correct layout back again from the USA to IT:

$ grep X /etc/default/console-setup
# values as the XkbModel, XkbLayout, XkbVariant and XkbOptions options
# in /etc/X11/xorg.conf.
XKBMODEL="pc105"
XKBLAYOUT="it"
XKBVARIANT=""
