That's right. The test procedure was to just install support for many languages and go on logging in with a different language for session and starting (newly installed) thunderbird.
What do you mean by upstream package? What i'm saying applies to the newest gutsy package. I can get an even newer build from the official site (same version number though) and everything works with it (there are always five entries). But this is not a package but a standalone thunderbird.
Neither the program prints any warning nor the logs contain any sign of a problem.
