Looking at my older 6.6 kernel however I'm reminded that some kernels may have the drivers we need in the form of tiny drm (which is the backend for simpledrm??):

/lib/ modules/ 6.6.0-14- generic/ kernel/ drivers/ gpu/drm/ tiny/
I don't think we'd want to exclude those from initrd.
