Comment 13 for bug 288797

Thanks to Michael for the work-around but this issue is of far more than a "medium" importance. As an experienced user, I switched to apt the moment I realized Synaptic was broken. However, new Ubuntu users will likely find this very frustrating and won't be impressed with Ubuntu's quality - too bad since this is probably the best release yet.
