Here is the message you get when you select "view .xsession-errors'. i hand wrote+typed this, but hopefully its still correct:

/etc/gdm/xsession: Beginning session startup...
Setting IM through im-switch for locale = en_AU
Start IM through /etc/X11/xinit/xinput.d/all_ALL linked to /etc/X11/xinit/xinput.d/default.
