Thanks Andrew for you branch. It looks good to me. However, sudo 1.7.1 is required which should be merged from Debian testing.

The core issue here is whether visual feedback should be given when a password is entered. Depending on the outcome of this decision the proposed branch should be merged or not.

I'm unsubscribing the ubuntu-main-sponsor team until a definite decision has been reached. Please resubscribe the team if a decision to enable visual feedback by default has been taken, sudo 1.7.1 is available in Ubuntu, and the bzr branch has been updated to the match the package in Ubuntu.
