xsane runs as root after making the patch suggested above by Daniel Hahler for mounddevsubfs.sh. This is at least a start, but running as root is 1) dangerous and 2) a nuisance in dealing with files resulting from the scans.
Looks like there's work to do. I'd do it if I were more familiar with usb.
