One more clarification:
For me, my Front speakers were muted. If I unmute with alsamixer, all is fine and pavucontrol can adjust volume, etc. If I mute the Front speakers with alsamixer, I cannot unmute again with pavucontrol. This may be a totally unrelated issue.
