pavucontrol still doesn't unmute with alsa-plugins compiled against alsa-lib 1.0.22-0ubuntu3. Since the new combination of alsa-lib, pulseaudio and alsa-plugins does work if you unmute via alsamixer, I am going to step back from this bug and let the people who actually know what they are doing with all of this handle it. :)
