Actually, ALSA is more comprehensively broken than I realised:

- alsamixer only shows master gain (it doesn't show the controls for the HDA Intel card any more)

- alsa no longer provides correct default sound card information - skype doesn't work until you specifically choose the correct card (ie default no longer works)

- the digital mic sensitivity control no longer works (gnome-volume-control). You can alter the level, but it has no effect

- if you choose alsa as the sound capture device (gnome-sound-properties) and then run sound recorder and start recording, the recorded time shoots up rapidly (minutes and then hours) and when you press stop, it hangs.

... and the sound still crackles in wine under alsa.
