I am experiencing the same problem where pulse audio crashes during pause. I recently changed the values in /etc/pulse/daemon.conf of:
default-sample-channels = 6
default-sample-rate = 48000
and the problem seemed to coincide with this setting. The streams which are paused are two-channel streams though.
This may be related: When I play an ac3 audio file through mplayer pulse audio will crash only seconds into the stream with the following message:
Soft CPU time limit exhausted, terminating.
