Did you try a number of PDF files? It seems that some types of PDF are always grayscale by virtue of how the fonts are embedded in them. PDF documents generated by OpenOffice are among those for instance.
I don’t feel terribly confident with these patches at all to be frank. It would be good if a person who knows what she is doing were to take a look at this and have a go at a proper solution.
