Yes, I have hundreds of black and white documents I've scanned or downloaded and I have the same problem with all of them. Here are two screenshots comparing evince with xpdf and the document they come from.

Although I can basically read it in evince, it hurts my eyes and takes me about twice as long to read as it takes using xpdf. Since I spend a large part of each day reading scanned texts, I've switched to using xpdf to read these documents to save time and my eyes.
