I too am still having this problem with the latest Ubuntu 9.10 where my ipod 5.5g video isn't detected. It is detected in Rhythm Box. The issue seems to be with podsleuth in detecting the ipod

podsleuth --rescan
No iPods were found in the HAL device tree
