I can confirm that the workaround in comment 2 did resolve the issue for me and I had a fast startup! :-)

Graphics card: ATI Radeon 4850 chipset
Drivers: Proprietary ATI drivers version 8.723
Kernel: 2.6.32-22-generic-pae
