Bug Description

Binary package hint: pcmanfm

I have karmic koala running on two different machines. On both the support for "default applications" does not work. It does'nt matter which file i double click. Everytime it asks me with which application the file should be opened with. The dialog does not shows any application under "prefered application". And i'm not able to set the file association permanently.

If i double click a mp3 file for example, the "open with" dialog pops up, i type "lxmusic" in, lxmusic starts but does not show the mp3 file in the playlist nor starts to play.

Files like .cvs (text files) will be opened with leafpad automatically.

Extra explanation for SRU :
Impact : all mime associations are lost, so you can't double-click on a icon to open something with the good program. This is quite critical for a file-manager.
Cause : No support for mime-cache 1.2 in pcmanfm.
Fix : the bug was fixed upstream, by supporting the new API, even if it's a fake supporting because current branch of pcmanfm is in bug-fix-only mode.
Possible regression : Probably not, since the patch touch only mime-cache support, and this is now completely broken in Karmic. elrond and I have tested the fixed package without any regressions.

This bug affects me too. In my case all the files are seen as application/octet-stream type. Also if I associate a file to be by a default programs all the other files (just because all files are seen as "unknown octet stream") will be associated with that program. For example if I associate a pdf to be opened with epdfviewer also .odt .avi .mp3 etc will be open with epdfviewer.

this seems to be due to incompatibility with latest shared-mime-info:
http://bugs.archlinux.org/task/16760
and it also seems to have been fixed in latest svn version of pcmanfm. i think the importance is rather high, as it makes the manager pretty much useless. roxterm makes for a better file browser right now, and i'm no terminal geek.

looks like whoever built the ubuntu packages didn't add these lines to the post init scripts:

  update-mime-database /usr/share/mime
  update-desktop-database

i could be mistaken though.

A fixed package is avalable in my PPA : https://edge.launchpad.net/~gilir/+archive/unstable/+packages

Please test it and report back any problem you have with this. If the tests are good, I'll propose it for inclusion in official repository.

Thanks.

Dear all,

Currently running Ubuntu Karmic - upgraded from 9.04 las friday, and I have been attempting to get the mime types to work again, so for anyone else out there who has just upgraded and wants to get this rather annoying issue fixed here is what I did.

download an 'old' version of pcmanfm that works, here is a link

http://www.2shared.com/file/8810097/8692f477/pcmanfm_052-1_i386.html

then once downloaded use
sudo dpkg -i pcmanfm_052-1_i386.deb
to install it, then log out then log back in, and now the mime types are back.

Thanks to lazarev on the ubuntu forums who put up this solution which worked for me (here is the thread.. http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=1301208 )

At the top of this page it says that a fix has been implemented, and the SRU was created by Julien (back in December 2009). However either it seems not to have been added to karmic for upgrades or as an update - at least the upgrade lost all the mime type associations when I did it last week (15 october 2010).

I hope the above can help someone else out.

As always thanks go to the Ubuntu and Debian guys for creating a highly usable, stable linux system.

David
