This true, at least, with .tar.gz, .deb, .doc, .odt, .xls, .ods, .txt, .rpm, .pdf, .ics, .cwk, .ogg, and .mp3. I haven't actually tested other file types, but I'm assuming the bug is true for them as well.

Description: Ubuntu intrepid (development branch)
Release: 8.10
In other file managers, such as XFE, all mime types are displayed properly.
I've upgraded to Ubuntu 9.10 Beta and I have the same problem with PCManfm version 0.5.1+svn20090607-1 (installed from Ubuntu repository). Before upgrading Ubuntu, PCManfm works well (version 0.5-3 of Ubuntu repository). In Thunar file manager mime types are displayed properly.
Linux kernel is 2.6.31-13-generic i686.
