Bug Description

Binary package hint: packagekit

PackageKit and especially the apt backend has improved largely since the start of the 0.3 series. Currently we ship the rather old 0.2.4 release in Intrepid, which features a very basic and and buggy apt backend. The backend in 0.3.2 can be regarded as nearly feature complete:

http://www.packagekit.org/pk-matrix.html

A screenshot of the latest can be found here:

http://www.glatzor.de/fileadmin/files/screenshots/packagekit/Bildschirmfoto.png

Fedora which relies on PackageKit as the main graphical user interface for package manipulation also plans to ship 0.3.2, which has already landed on rawhide. Sharing the same version would help to lesser maintenace burdon.

Therefor I would ask for a freeze exception of packagekit and packagekit-gnome 0.3.2.

I constantly published releases in the PPA of the packagekit team:

https://launchpad.net/~packagekit/+archive

The build logs are here:

https://edge.launchpad.net/~packagekit/+archive/+build/711385
https://edge.launchpad.net/~packagekit/+archive/+build/710758

The packaging is done using a bzr repository:

lp:~packagekit/packagekit/ubuntu-packagekit
lp:~packagekit/packagekit/ubuntu-packagekit-gnome

Cheers,

Sebastian

Since the differences between the 0.2.4 and 0.3.2 are quite large I don't attach a full diff, but one of the apt backend, which is the crucial part for Debian/Ubuntu.

Is there any intent to get this promoted to Main for Intrepid?

I don't believe so. There are no users in main that would want
it promoted, and it's not ready to be the package management
solution in the default install yet, the application is still
very young.

I believe jockey plans to use it at some point, but not this
cycle. We can re-evaluate next cycle which component it should
be in.

Thanks,

James

Judging by the popcon it doesn't seem like we are risking much, and the package should benefit from the testing exposition it could get in Intrepid (see bug 250970 and bug 262086). I'm biased towards accepting this, but if there is a justified concern against it I won't oppose it.

Nobody objected so far, I'm therefore confirming the FFe.

What is the status for this? We have 0.3.3 from upstream now and packagekit-gnome needs to be updated in line with packagekit (otherwise you get bug 271881).

I already updated my packaging to 0.3.3. So would you confirm the upload of packagekit 0.3.3 and gnome-packagekit-0.3.3?

The 0.3.3 release is a bug fix release only. Which would also be nice to have from the apt backend perspective.

Cheers,

Sebastian
