sleep 100 & killall sleep
works fine for me in Ubuntu Karmic Alpha 4 amd64 (with updates as of 2009-08-16):
Script started on Sun 16 Aug 2009 06:54:43 PM PDT jonathan@black:~$ sleep 100 & [1] 28262 jonathan@black:~$ killall sleep [1]+ Terminated sleep 100 jonathan@black:~$ exit exit

Doing it with the sleep 100 in a separate terminal also works fine for me.
