In response to Stephane T, when you run "killall soffice.bin", that knocks out the quickstarter. This could be tied up to the system shutdown button with something like "killall soffice.bin && shutdown -P", but it's an openoffice specific hack, and, from what I've read, the user cannot, in any case, access the command invoked by the shutdown button, which is hardcoded in gnome somewhere!
